Complete revision guide covering all 3 topics in Vectors & Transformations for the Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics (9-1) specification. From geometric transformations to vector geometry proofs — free worked examples, exam tips, and practice resources.
Vectors & Transformations is the fifth of six topic areas in IGCSE Edexcel Mathematics, worth 6-10% of the total exam mark. It covers four geometric transformations (reflection, rotation, translation, and enlargement), column vector notation and arithmetic, and vector geometry proofs including collinearity and midpoint arguments. Despite its lower weighting, this area contains some of the most predictable exam questions — making it an efficient place to pick up marks.

This is the smallest topic area but one of the most predictable. Transformation questions always follow the same format: perform it on a grid, then describe it in words. Vector questions build from arithmetic to proofs. Master the vocabulary (centre of rotation, scale factor, position vector, collinear) because marks depend on precision. Use our free worksheets for targeted practice and keep the formula sheet open as a quick reference.
Each guide below covers the key concepts, worked examples from Grade 5 through Grade 9, common exam mistakes, and targeted revision tips. Click any topic to access the full study guide.
Perform and describe all four geometric transformations on coordinate grids. Identify invariant points, combine transformations, and describe single equivalent transformations.
Study GuideRepresent vectors using column notation. Add, subtract, and multiply vectors by scalars. Find the magnitude of a vector and understand parallel and equal vectors.
Study GuideExpress routes as vectors using position vectors. Prove points are collinear, find midpoint vectors, and demonstrate lines are parallel using vector algebra.
Study GuideTransformation questions appear on both Paper 1 (non-calculator) and Paper 2 (calculator), typically asking you to perform a transformation on a coordinate grid and then describe a different transformation in full. Vector arithmetic questions require column vector operations and may appear on either paper. Vector geometry proofs (Higher only) usually appear as the final question or penultimate question on Paper 2, requiring you to express routes, simplify, and draw geometric conclusions.
Geometric Transformations
4-6 marks, perform & describe
Vector Arithmetic
2-4 marks, column operations
Vector Geometry (H)
4-6 marks, proof questions
Incomplete transformation descriptions
Each transformation requires specific information. Reflection needs the mirror line equation, rotation needs the centre, angle, and direction, enlargement needs the centre and scale factor. Missing any element loses marks.
Confusing translation vectors with coordinates
A translation vector describes movement (how far right/left and up/down), not a position. Write column vectors with round brackets for vectors and square brackets or parentheses for coordinates — and never mix them up.
Wrong direction in vector routes
Going from A to B uses vector AB, but going from B to A reverses the sign to -AB. In vector geometry proofs, getting the direction wrong changes every subsequent line of working.
Forgetting negative scale factors in enlargement
A negative scale factor means the image is on the opposite side of the centre of enlargement. The shape is inverted (rotated 180 degrees) as well as scaled. Many students draw it on the same side.
