What Is Common App?
The Common Application is a single online platform that lets you apply to over 1,000 US colleges and universities with one application form. You fill in your personal details, academic history, extracurricular activities, and essays once, then submit to multiple universities. Each university may also require supplemental essays specific to their institution.
Unlike UCAS (UK), there is no limit on how many universities you can apply to through Common App. However, most students apply to 8-15 universities, divided into reach schools, match schools, and safety schools.
Key Deadlines for 2026-2027 Cycle
| Milestone | Date |
|---|---|
| Common App opens | 1 August 2026 |
| Early Decision (ED) / Early Action (EA) | November 1-15, 2026 |
| ED/EA decisions released | ~Mid-December 2026 |
| ED II deadline (some universities) | ~January 1, 2027 |
| Regular Decision (RD) | January 1-15, 2027 |
| RD decisions released | ~March 2027 |
| College Decision Day | 1 May 2027 |
Early Decision vs Early Action vs Regular Decision
| Type | Binding? | Deadline | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early Decision (ED) | Yes — must attend if accepted | Nov 1-15 | Your clear #1 choice |
| Early Action (EA) | No — non-binding | Nov 1-15 | Early decision without commitment |
| Regular Decision (RD) | No — non-binding | Jan 1-15 | Most applicants; compare multiple offers |
Strategy for UAE students: If you have a clear first-choice university and your grades/test scores are competitive, ED gives you the highest chance of admission (acceptance rates are typically 2-3x higher for ED). However, ED is binding — only apply ED if you're certain about the university and can afford it without comparing financial aid packages.
Common App Essay Tips
The main Common App essay is 650 words maximum. You choose from 7 prompts (or write on a topic of your choice). Key tips:
- Be personal, not generic. US admissions want to know YOU as a person. A story about your experience in Dubai that shaped your perspective is more compelling than a generic essay about "overcoming challenges."
- Show, don't tell. Instead of saying "I am passionate about science," describe the moment a specific experiment changed how you see the world.
- Your UAE perspective is an asset. Growing up in a multicultural city like Dubai gives you unique experiences — cultural code-switching, navigating multiple languages, understanding global perspectives. Use this authentically.
- Start early. Draft in August, revise in September, finalise by October (for ED) or December (for RD). Multiple drafts and feedback are essential.
UAE-Specific Advice
- SAT scores: Most selective US universities require or recommend SAT scores from international applicants. Prepare early — our SAT tutors in Dubai can help maximise your score.
- Transcript evaluation: US universities evaluate international transcripts using services like WES or through their own admissions offices. Your school counsellor should be familiar with this process.
- Financial aid: Many US universities offer need-based or merit-based aid to international students. Apply for financial aid simultaneously with your application — don't assume you won't qualify.
- Teacher recommendations: US applications typically require 2 teacher recommendations. Choose teachers who know you well and can speak to your intellectual curiosity, not just your grades.
If your child is targeting competitive US universities, strong Maths and English preparation is essential — both for school grades and standardised test scores. Get matched with a specialist tutor through GetYourTutors.
