EmSAT (Emirates Standardized Test) is the UAE's national computer-based exam system measuring academic readiness across 7 subjects. As of November 2024, EmSAT is no longer a mandatory requirement for Grade 12 students — but many universities still accept it. Here is the complete guide to EmSAT subjects, scoring, registration, and what the policy change means for your child.
IMPORTANT UPDATE — NOVEMBER 2024
- EmSAT cancelled as mandatory requirement for Grade 12 university admission
- Universities now set their own admission criteria
- EmSAT still exists and is operational — students can take it voluntarily
- Many universities still accept EmSAT scores as a valid option
- Score validity: 18 months from test date
What Is EmSAT?
EmSAT is a national standardised testing system developed by the UAE Ministry of Education, launched in 2017. There are three types:
- EmSAT Baseline — Grade 1 (early literacy and numeracy)
- EmSAT Advantage — Grades 4, 6, 8, 10 (developmental tracking)
- EmSAT Achieve — Grade 12 (the main university admission test — this is what most people mean by "EmSAT")
EmSAT Achieve covers 7 subjects: English, Arabic, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer Science. All tests are computer-based and taken at designated test centres across the UAE.
The 2024 Policy Change — What Happened
On 3 November 2024, the UAE Education, Human Development and Community Development Council announced the immediate cancellation of EmSAT as a mandatory requirement for Grade 12 students. Key changes:
- EmSAT is no longer mandated by the government for university admission
- Universities now have flexibility to set their own admission criteria
- Admission to medical and engineering programs now prioritises science subject grades over overall percentage
- Universities can admit students lacking English proficiency and enrol them in remedial courses
- EmSAT still exists and is operational — students can still take it voluntarily
- Many universities continue to accept EmSAT as a valid standardised test option
What this means for parents: Your child no longer MUST take EmSAT to apply to UAE universities, but having EmSAT scores can still strengthen an application. Check directly with your target university to understand their current admission criteria.
EmSAT Subjects & Scoring
All EmSAT Achieve subjects are scored on a 500–2,000 scale (English uses 300–2,000). Higher scores indicate greater readiness for university-level study.
| Subject | Score Range | Duration | University-Ready Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | 300–2,000 | 135 min | 1,100+ (general), 1,550+ (competitive) |
| Mathematics | 500–2,000 | 120 min | 700+ (general), 1,100+ (STEM) |
| Physics | 500–2,000 | 120 min | 800+ |
| Chemistry | 500–2,000 | 120 min | 500+ (general), 1,100+ (medical) |
| Biology | 500–2,000 | 90 min | 500+ (general), 1,100+ (medical) |
| Arabic | 500–2,000 | 100 min | 900+ |
| Computer Science | 500–2,000 | 150 min | Varies by program |
EmSAT English — CEFR Alignment
EmSAT English scores map to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR):
| Score | CEFR Level | Equivalent IELTS |
|---|---|---|
| 1,550+ | B2+ / C1 | 6.5+ |
| 1,250–1,549 | B2 | 5.5–6.0 |
| 1,100–1,249 | B1+ | 5.0 |
| 875–1,099 | B1 | 4.0–4.5 |
University Minimum Scores
| University | English | Maths | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| UAEU (general) | 1,100 | 700 | Arabic 900+; Sciences 500+ (1,100+ for medical) |
| UAEU (engineering) | 1,100 | 1,100 | Higher maths requirement for STEM |
| AUS | 1,550 | 500 | Or SAT Maths 450+; highest English threshold |
| General guideline | 1,100–1,250 | 800–900 | Check directly with your target university |
Important: Since EmSAT is no longer mandatory, these are the scores universities accept IF you choose to submit EmSAT results. Check directly with your target university for their current admission criteria — some may have switched to alternative assessments.
