UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) is the centralised application system for all UK undergraduate courses. UAE students apply through UCAS using their predicted grades — you apply before sitting final exams. The main deadline for 2027 entry is 29 January 2027, with Oxbridge/Medicine closing on 15 October 2026.

What Is UCAS?
UCAS handles applications for virtually every undergraduate degree at every UK university — from Oxford and Cambridge to newer institutions. Whether you're applying from a British curriculum school in Dubai, an IB school, or an American curriculum school, you go through UCAS.
The key difference from UAE or US university applications: you apply with predicted grades, not final results. Your school provides predicted A-Level, IB, or equivalent grades, and universities make conditional offers based on these predictions. You then need to achieve those grades in your final exams to confirm your place.

Step-by-Step Application Process
- Register on UCAS Hub (ucas.com) — create your account from September of the year before entry. Your school may register you through their centre.
- Research courses and universities — use the UCAS course search tool. Check entry requirements carefully — they differ by university and course.
- Choose up to 5 courses — you can apply to Oxford OR Cambridge (not both). Medicine applicants can choose max 4 medicine courses + 1 alternative.
- Write your personal statement — 4,000 characters (about 600 words). This is your chance to demonstrate passion and suitability for the course. See tips below.
- Get your reference — your school provides a reference letter and predicted grades. This is handled by your school's UCAS coordinator.
- Submit before the deadline — Oxbridge/Medicine by 15 October; all others by late January.
- Respond to offers — universities send conditional or unconditional offers. You must choose a Firm choice and an Insurance choice.
- Meet your conditions — achieve the grades in your final exams. If you miss your offer, Clearing provides alternative options.
Personal Statement Tips for UAE Students
- 80% academic, 20% personal — UK universities want to see intellectual curiosity about the subject, not a list of extracurriculars. Discuss books, research, experiments, or ideas that sparked your interest.
- Be specific about your curriculum — mention specific topics from your IGCSE, IB, or A-Level studies that connect to your chosen degree.
- Demonstrate wider reading — reference books, journals, podcasts, or online courses beyond your syllabus. Admissions tutors want evidence of independent learning.
- Connect your UAE experience — living in the UAE gives you a unique perspective. If relevant to your course, mention how Dubai's economy, culture, or environment has shaped your interest.
- Get feedback — have your school counsellor and subject teachers review drafts. A tutor with UK university experience can also help refine your statement.
Oxbridge & Medicine Applications
Applying to Oxford, Cambridge, or Medicine from the UAE requires additional preparation beyond the standard UCAS application:
- Admissions tests — most Oxbridge courses require an admissions test (e.g., MAT for Maths, PAT for Physics, BMAT/UCAT for Medicine). Register for these separately — deadlines are typically in September/October.
- Interviews — Oxbridge interviews are typically held in December. International students may be interviewed online. Prepare by practising thinking aloud through unfamiliar problems.
- Super-curricular activities — demonstrate engagement beyond the syllabus: research projects, online courses (MOOCs), essay competitions, reading groups.
- Predicted grades matter — competitive courses typically require predicted A*A*A or equivalent (IB 40+). If your predicted grades are below the typical offer, your application is unlikely to succeed regardless of other factors.
How UAE Qualifications Are Viewed
| Qualification | Typical Offer (competitive course) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge A-Level | A*AA — AAB | Directly comparable to UK students |
| IB Diploma | 36-40 points (6,6,6 HL) | Widely accepted; HL subjects must match course |
| AP + US Diploma | 5,5,5 in relevant APs | Plus SAT scores; some universities prefer A-Level/IB |
| IGCSE only | N/A | IGCSEs alone don't qualify; need A-Level/IB/equivalent |
UAE students from British curriculum schools are in the strongest position — their qualifications are identical to UK students. IB students are equally well-positioned. American curriculum students may face additional requirements. Speak to your school's university counsellor early in Year 12 to plan your application strategy.
If your child needs to strengthen their predicted grades before UCAS applications, GetYourTutors offers specialist A-Level and IB tutors who understand UK university entry requirements. Get matched with a tutor who can help your child achieve the grades they need.
